The only thing better than having Sherlock Holmes on your side if you’re falsely accused of a murder is having his real-life creator in your corner.  Oscar Slater, a German-Jewish immigrant who was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of an old woman, won his freedom – and ultimately his vindication – largely as the result of the efforts of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  But whereas Sherlock Holmes solved crimes in the time it took to read a story, Slater had to endure nearly twenty years of imprisonment before an appellate court reversed his conviction.
