Of the many works of Rabbi Moshe Hayyim Luzzatto of Padua (known as the “Ramchal,” 1707-1747), The Path of the Upright stands out as his magnum opus. Ever since it was first published in 1740 in Amsterdam, the book has enjoyed great renown. It was lauded with praise by the leading rabbis of the time and was eventually adopted as a basic text for ethical study. When the Vilna Gaon first read ‘The Path of the Upright’ he reportedly said, “I saw a great light appear on earth.” Whether studied analytically or simply read for inspiration, this classic has been a major staple of Jewish religious life.
